So here I am a portly chap who has been teaching for many a year.

The majority of the parents of the kids I teach are not as old as my teaching career.Much the same goes for many fellow teachers too.

This Review is from TEFLWatch's Hero

I was asked by Nemesis to have a look at an online TEFL program from KEI TEFL - http://www.koredinco.com - based in South Korea. First of all I have to point out the position I was coming from as I have always been a bit cynical about 'on-line' TEFL courses. I'm sure there is a huge potential market for such courses all over the world. I have always believed that for something as practical and 'hands-on' as TEFL it is essential to have practical, 'hands-on' experience as a large part of the training.

It seems that KEI TEFl are aware of this point too, in addition to their online TEFL course (19 units in the 100-hour web-course which can be completed in as long as three moths or as quickly as the student wishes) they offer a practical weekend including teaching practice and feedback as well as other practical experiences for their students. How valuable the 100-hour certificate would be without completing the practicum in terms of qualification I guess would be largely down to the criteria imposed by employers. How much value you'd take out of it as a student I'm sure varies from person to person as well, the experience of a full-time course pits you in a group which also adds to the experience as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway I put my prejudices aside and had a good look at their offering.

The 100-hour course is a reasonable $250 and the content seems very well put together. I'm not really qualified to evaluate its content thoroughly, but it is certainly comprehensive and includes all the components I would expect to see in a TEFL course: basic theory and introduction to popular methodolgies, classroom management, lesson planning and advice on teaching all the skills and evaluating students. The individual units are well presented and each includes a number of tasks in order to complete the unit, as far as I can see this generally means doing a bit of web-based research and then submitting an evaluation or criticism to the online forum area which is one of the website's features. There are tests, one mid-term and one final and also a 500-700 word 'professional paper' on one of a list of subjects to complete before passing the course.

All-in-all it looks a very good site and certainly looks like it is professionally put together. How often we see websites packed with TEFL-based adverts and links pages full of garbage and dead-links, not so in this case the links page is very well stocked with interesting sites and articles. The forum seems to have only a few users at the moment, perhaps the student list is small just now, but seems to have some interesting content. Most importantly the website seems devoid of silly ads for employers, schools, agents and the like - there are no flashing banners promising to find you a job and it seems to me that the whole experience would be a useful and pleasing one.

My own belief that a TEFL course should have be a practical experience is unlikely to change, but I'm sure it's just not possible for some folks to take a month or two months out of their career to do that and I suppose for such people then this certificate is ideal. If taken with the 20-hour practical component (at $375 for the intensive weekend) then it is hard to see why it shouldn't be just as worthwhile as a full-time TEFL course taken at one of Asia's many TEFL training schools. Clearly they don't carry the same standards as a CELTA qualification but, refreshingly, they don't claim to carry 'International Accreditation' (which in most cases is a very empty claim anyway!) and at $625 for the certificate and practical component it seems like very good value.

I guess the proof of a pudding is in the eating so it would be good to hear from any of KEI's graduates - I only spent an hour or so looking over the website and content myself.

This course was reviewed on TEFLWatch by Hero.

http://icalweb.com/about.asp

Unfortunately I only had time for a very quick look at this one, pressures of the day job this time of year! I hope that some of the course graduates will be along to provide some real information, positive and negative hopefully.

ICAL was one of the very first schools offering online teacher training way back in 1998. Making use of powerful new internet technologies and employing only the best to both create and tutor our courses, we soon became the largest online provider with our courses being taken right across the world.

Since then ICAL has become firmly established as a leader in the field, often copied but always one step ahead!

With a new, innovative way of teaching, it soon became clear that the internet as a teaching medium is the way forward and now, with more tutors than any other online provider, thousands of graduates and many thousands more current students, you can be certain that when you join ICAL you are joining one of the largest and best online teacher training providers around today.

Our students come from all over the world and often come to us through word of mouth referrals. The reputation we have is second to none and the security of training with a well established school like ours is always worth while.

That's the introduction in the 'about us' section of the website, all seems straightforward enough! They don't claim any accreditation, which is generally a good sign and they point out that there are in fact no international accrediting bodies for TEFL providers - honesty is the best policy and other TEFL providers could take a leaf from this book!

They offer a TEFL course at $265, a TEFL course with teaching practice at $395 and a CALL certificate at $315.

The TEFL course looks fairly standard fair, although it didn't seem as detailed as others I have seen, on the other hand I was only able to access the overview so I didn't really get a great look at what they offer. It does seem to be a feature of the site that actual content can't be accessed until after registration, I can understand that - it would be good to hear from others who have taken the course for that reason.

The teaching practice element seems to be an evaluation of teachers by video and diary. There is no chance to take a residential session as with some other courses. It would be interesting to hear what others think about this. As I have stated previously I have always thought that for such a practical skill as TEFL it would be hard to train without at least a minimum of a practical component. As they point out, this 'teaching practice' that they offer is aimed at the teacher already working in a classroom and as such is an evaluation rather than practical training.

The CALL certificate is something that I confess I have not seen before:

A thorough introduction to CALL - Computer Assisted Language Learning. Taking you from the very basics of what CALL is to an in-depth look at how to set up a lab, which programs to use and how they can be best used in the classroom. Plenty of sound CALL activities and exercises.

It assumes minimal knowledge of computing (you just have to know how to use the Internet and email) and takes you through the 5 modules step-by-step with plenty of help from your personal tutor.

The courses can apparently be completed over the time period that the student desires, which I guess would be a positive for those with busy schedules. They also offer assistance with work placements, although we need to hear from more experienced folks with the company I guess.

Their forum seems to contain quite a few topics, I found this which caught my eye being based in Thailand myself: http://icalweb.com/mytesl/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=364

I tried to post a request for graduates to come here and give their opinions, but unfortunately it seems that forum registration is only open to those who have registered for the course ;D

Summing up, I didn't really see enough of the content to be able to say if the course is any good or not! Let's just hope that we can get some objective views from those in the know .....

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,298743,00.html

Timothy Ferriss is quite an accomplished man. He's a Princeton University guest lecturer in High-Tech Entrepreneurship and Electrical Engineering, the first American in history to hold a Guinness World Record in tango, a national Chinese kickboxing, and even a MTV breakdancer in Taiwan, among various other things. But, what he's most known for, at least lately, is his bestselling book, The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join The New Rich, that focuses on the 80-20 principle, outsourcing your life, and getting away from your desk.

Perhaps it's not as easy as it sounds, but Ferriss's own life makes it appear so. We caught up with him recently to assess whether his theories are more hype than fact. Read on to learn what he had to say.

Admittedly, some workers have probably discovered the "4-Hour Work Week" principles on their own. However: are people who've discovered these practices themselves the only ones who are risk-ready enough to use them effectively?

Not at all. The principle concept of "lifestyle design" is lower risk than the "deferred-life" career planning most follow. It is not anti-investment, but it is anti-retirement-as-life-goal. I have maxed-out IRAs and 401(k)s and never gamble. The 4-Hour Workweek is intended to save people the trouble of trial and error -- it's the mistakes that cost you, not the recommendations I make.

Some of your critics dislike that you condone the use of loopholes or technicalities to gain advantage; they think its tantamount to cheating. Is your school of thinking at odds with, or consistent with the idea of the "American work ethic?"

It's 100 percent consistent with work ethic. People are fond of misquoting me, but I only criticize the predominate overwork ethic that focuses on activities instead of results, being busy instead of productive. The founding fathers advocated innovation, dissent, and hard work when applied to the right things. This book is reflective of their philosophies.

Most critics haven't read the book. I never break rules -- I analyze them and question the outdated assumptions and habits based on them. To put this in historical context, the bar in the Olympic high jump used to be jumped in a hurdling motion. Then, one athlete started used the current back-flop technique and revolutionized the game. Similar evolution can be seen in almost all sports, from better materials and drafting in the Tour de France to hydrodynamic suits in swimming. Is this cheating? Is Netflix "cheating" against Blockbuster by eliminating retail? No -- it's being a smarter player. Career planning is now evolving, and I'm trying to teach people how to be the chess player instead of the chess piece.

This book has generated controversy among readers. Do you take readers' invective personally (when they express disbelief or criticism), or was this bestseller simply a low-maintenance money-making venture, or "muse?"

I don't take it personally. This book challenges a lot of behaviors people hold dear, even though they are counterproductive. People either "get" this book or they don't. At the end of the day, it's just the number of people who get it that count. My blog is on the blogroll of some of the top tech CEOs in the world. Do I have all of the answers? Of course not. But I'm asking some important and long-avoided questions that make people uncomfortable. I knew people would either love this book or hate it, and I'm fine with that.

I never expected to make a profit on this book. Something like 13 of 14 publishers turned it down, and some editors -- just like some readers -- were offended and hostile that I would question their work-a-day comfort zone. No one expected it to become a phenomenon, getting parodied on Jay Leno, sold into dozens of countries, and so forth. It's been unreal.

Do most corporate workers hate their jobs?

No. Most corporate workers are bored and dangerously comfortable. They are in that gray area between love and hate that leaves most with constant low-grade anxiety and an acute sense of wasted potential. This is more common and more damaging than hate, because hate spurs action. Tolerable mediocrity leads you to wake up one day and ask "what happened to the last 20 years?" That's no way to spend the prime of life. I was in that zone from 2000 to 2004, and it could have continued until I had a heart attack 20 or 30 years later. I realized this in June of 2004, and that's when I started experimenting with more uncommon alternatives. Boredom should scare people as much as hate.

Is this the future of out-sourcing? Not just corporate exportation of labor, but personal exportation of labor?

It is. In a digital world where the Center for Work-Life Policy reports the new "40-hour" week is 70 hours and growing, where the norm is time poverty, it's an inevitable shift. Millions of people are already spending income -- a renewable resource -- to reclaim fleeting time -- a non-renewable resource. So, what if there were an eBay for all of the tasks you didn't want to do, where people worldwide would compete to give you more time? What if you could get an MBA for $5 an hour to handle all of your menial personal chores and time-consuming business busywork? I have a veritable army working on my behalf, and someone who makes $30,000 per year could do the same. There are dozens of companies set up in places ranging from India and the Phillipines to Jamaica and Canada. It's the fastest evolving market I've ever seen, and it's only speeding up. Five years from now, most white-collar workers will have digital concierges of some type.

A lot of your lifestyle suggestions describe ways to limit the unnecessary expenditure of one's creative energy. Is creativity a scarce resource for most people?

Creativity is just an under-exercised faculty. It's always easier to choose from the standard menu of options than to think laterally, but the latter is definitely where rewards come faster. Take the red pill.

From: 10 Reasons Bad Employees Don't Get Fired

Have you ever received poor service from someone you expected should be helping you as part of his or her job? The answer is almost certainly "yes."

And, if you're like most people, you have probably also experienced the frustration of working with someone who made your own job more difficult.

In both cases you may have wondered, "Why don't they just fire this person?"

Firing someone may seem easy in theory, but it is often a last resort for an employer. A bad employee's supervisor may know that the employee isn't performing up to snuff, but that supervisor -- or the company -- may have what they consider to be a good reason for not firing the employee.

Whenever you encounter someone who you think deserves to be fired -- either in your own workplace or elsewhere -- consider if any of the following might be the reason the bad employee is still on the job:

1. The employee has a relationship with someone higher up.
A relationship doesn't necessarily have to be romantic or family, although either is a possibility. In many cases, the relationship that keeps someone from getting fired is friendship. The bad employee may not perform well on the job, but may be a golf or drinking buddy for your boss, or may simply be someone that senior management enjoys having around the office.

2. The boss relies on the employee.
According to Terence R. Mitchell, Ph.D., author of the business text "People in Organizations: Understanding Their Behavior," when a supervisor depends on an employee, the supervisor is less likely to attribute poor performance to the employee's ability or attitude, and more likely to attribute the poor performance to forces beyond the employee's control.

3. The employee brings more value to the company than he or she costs.
Maybe the employee who jokes around and wastes other employees' time at meetings is also a brilliant worker whose productivity has resulted in significant revenue for the company.

4. The boss thinks it could be worse.
Even if everyone knows the employee is not pulling his or her weight, management may fear that a replacement could do an even worse job. This fear is compounded if the company has previously had other people perform more poorly in the position.

5. The boss is afraid of the employee.
If there are concerns that an employee might sue the company or possibly become violent if fired, it may take longer to let that employee go. If there's a threat, the company needs to consult with legal or security experts and put appropriate measures in place before letting a bad employee go.

6. The boss feels sorry for the employee.
In such cases, a boss is sympathetic to the employee, and not to those whom the employee's actions may be hurting. The boss may worry that if the bad employee is fired, he or she won't be able to find another job. If the employee needs the money to support a family, has health problems, or has recently experienced another life challenge, the boss may feel it's best to let the employee keep the job.

7. The boss doesn't want to go through the hiring process.
It takes time to review applications, conduct interviews, check references, and train a new person. The boss may believe it's easier to deal with the consequences when the bad employee messes up rather than deal with hiring a replacement.

8. The employee knows something.
The employee might know something embarrassing about the boss, but it's more likely he or she simply knows historical information that the company needs today. For example, if the employee is the only one who knows how to operate an ancient piece of equipment that the company still uses, your employer may need to keep the employee around.

9. The employee has everybody fooled.
In their book "Snakes in Suits," Paul Babiak, Ph.D. and Robert D. Hare, Ph.D., explain that a surprising number of workplaces employ psychopaths. While psychopaths make up 1 percent of the general population, Babiak and Hare found that 3.5 percent of the executives they worked with "fit the profile of the psychopath." Psychopathic employees are pathological liars who get away with doing little or no work. They charm senior management with their "leadership potential," con co-workers into covering for them, and successfully blame others for their mistakes. If you're the only one who sees what they're up to, you're in a tough spot. Sometimes it’s the whistle-blower who gets fired, not the snake.

10. He or she is not really a bad employee.
So what if a co-worker sometimes works from home, takes long lunches, or does something else you don't think is fair – as long as his or her work gets done. If you're not the supervisor, you're not personally affected, and the employee is not hurting anyone such as customers or co-workers, stop stressing over what he or she does and focus instead on your own work.

This another informative post from Wangsuda of the defunct TEFLWatch Forums.

I recently ran a teacher training seminar at work, and one of the questions I posed was, "What are your classroom rules?" Just about every teacher present had a laundry list of stuff students could NOT do! No this, no that, no the other . . . no, No nO, NO! And my response was, "WTF? With all that you cannot do in your class, what can you do?" There was silence. I explained that having rules that contain the word "no," create two problems:
1. Students ALWAYS find a way around a "no" rule. IF you say "no gum in class," the students bring in candy. Amend the rule to "no gum and candy" and students bring in food. The cycle continues until the rule includes every known food type in the world.
2. There are so many "no's" in your rules that the students just give up. After all, the teacher allows nothing in class, so why should the students do anything?
So, what do to do with rules? Simple - make them positive. I use four, language-positive rules that (so far, thank Buddha) have covered most classroom situations. I would like to share them, and perhaps we can get some discussion on them, share various rules, and maybe come up with a difinitive classroom rules list.

My Rules:
1. Be Respectful - many teachers have rules stating "no talking back," "no gum chewing," "no writing on desks.” Cannot all this negativity be summed up in one positive statement? Yes, it can, and that is what "be respectful" means. It also means more than just no talking, chewing, and destruction. It is a method of treating other students as well. If a student is respectful to his/her teacher, his/her fellow students, and the school's property, than you have a well-behaved student whose life is not governed by a list of "no's."
2. Be Informed — when a student walks into my class he/she needs to be ready for anything. Being informed is more than having homework completed; it includes reading (assigned material as well as outside material), classroom awareness (what are we doing, and where are we in the grand scheme of things), and news awareness (being aware of school, local, state, and national events). Being informed helps in literature interpretation, since many texts relate their stories to events that happened in Thailand or world history.
3. Be Prepared— like the Boy Scouts, a student should be prepared when s/he walks into my class. This preparedness is more than just having a pencil and some paper (although that is nice); it includes being ready for a changing classroom dynamic. Some days may include acting out scenes from the currently studied literature, working on group projects, demonstrating a knowledge base and understanding of material on assessment day, and/or anything my educationally directed mind thinks of. Being prepared for class allows a student to better prepare him/herself for the world.
4. Participate — a student can be as respectful, informed, and prepared as s/he can, and I will never know it unless the student opens his/her mouth in class. My classes are loud, for much learning and understanding comes through interaction between the students and me. One method of assessment I use is how a student responds, orally, to questions I pose to the class. Participation also includes reenactment of literature, drawing, reading aloud, sharing ideas, debate of topics and concepts, and anything else I can think of which brings learning and understanding more accessible to the student.

This another informative post from Wangsuda of the defunct TEFLWatch Forums.

My Dad just sent me a box containing a lot of the notes I took when doing my grad work in education. As I was going through this stuff, I saw that there's some great material that should be shared with the teaching community here. So, here ya go! How to recognize less proficient learners and adjust your teaching strategies to better educate those less proficient. Mind you, this won't work in classes of over 30 students.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LESS-PROFICIENT READERS
Less-proficient readers read and process what they have read at a slower rate than most of their peers. Less-proficient readers are likely to have some or all of the following characteristics:
• Slower reasoning processes; less likely to see cause-and-effect relationships and to make inferences, draw conclusions, transfer learning, or generalize based on several experiences.
• Difficulty recognizing and using contextual clues to assist comprehension.
• Shorter attention spans and less motivation to learn.
• Difficulty with following directions.
• Difficulty retaining what they have learned.
• Poor work habits and difficulty working on their own.
• Less confidence and creativity than their peers.
• Poor organizational skills.
• Difficulty sequencing.
• Less confidence when reading orally.

TEACHING STRATEGIES: LESS-PROFICIENT READERS
• Provide a stimulating environment to help keep students’ attention.
• Use direct teaching; have a clearly defined goal
• Break learning goals into smaller tasks and teach in increments.
• Provide many practice opportunities.
• Provide immediate feedback to avoid having students “learn” errors; give encouragement to build confidence.
• Provide high interest, low-level reading materials for practice.
• Pre-teach vocabulary to build confidence.
• Preview unfamiliar concepts.
• Reward steps of achievement; use a progress chart to indicate improvement.
• Ask for and provide frequent summaries of reading material.

CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDENTS WITH BELOW AVERAGE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ABILITIES
• Short attention spans; easily distracted from tasks.
• Trouble with abstractions, such as humor, figures of speech, maps, and diagrams; they are concrete learners.
• Difficulty understanding cause and effect; reduced capability for problem solving, reasoning, drawing conclusions, making inferences, and generalizing; also have difficulty transferring learning from one situation to another and with sequencing.
• Communication problems with peers.
• May show a lack of judgment.
• Willingness to accept the authority of others.
• Dependence on others to assist with tasks.
• Like and need routines.

TEACHING STRATEGIES: STUDENTS WITH BELOW AVERAGE (PRE-BEGINNER OR BEGINNER) ENGLISH LANGUAGE ABILITIES
• Break down tasks into smaller tasks. Sequence the tasks.
• Give simple, clear directions; make the teaching objective clear.
• Provide many opportunities to practice; use computer-assisted instruction, peer tutoring, and much guided practice.
• Provide immediate feedback so that errors are not “learned.”
• Have whole-group responses, such as responding in unison, so that responses are offered from all students.
• Incorporate good work habits with learning tasks, such as emphasizing the importance of following directions, working cooperatively, and providing satisfactory work.
• Use a variety of teaching strategies, as well as visual, audio, and concrete materials.
• Assign smaller, less time-consuming tasks. Use concrete examples.
• Use direct teaching. Provide students with more time to complete work.
• Introduce key words before reading; provide guided notes that will help students through the assignment.
• Use a reward system. Help students keep track of achievements on a progress chart.
• Follow a familiar teaching procedure or pattern. One procedure is to model and explain the steps of a task; then repeat the steps, pausing between steps to allow students to tell what to do next.
• Include students in whole-group discussions; then review questions with individual students after the lesson.

GENERAL STRATEGIES FOR EFL/ESL TEACHING

1. Make the directions brief and specific. In some cases, have students repeat the directions for completing the task. Present the directions orally, in written form, and on tape. Have extra copies of the written instructions available or provided on the computer with enlarged fonts.
2. Provide well-organized study guides. Add prompts to the guides, highlighting or underlining important points and key words and ideas. Tape-record chapters of reading for students to take home or use books on tape available at local libraries. Have students keep assignment notebooks.
3. Use peer tutors and collaborative learning situations.
4. Teach vocabulary and important information before reading. Build on the students’ range of knowledge and experiences. Make connections to the students’ lives.
5. Review important information from previous readings or lessons before continuing.
6. Present information in a variety of ways to address different learning styles or intelligences. Include tactile and concrete presentations.
7. Teach to fill in specific gaps in knowledge. Direct instruction works well.
8. Break the learning goal into small subtasks and teach these sequentially. Teach prerequisite skills when needed.
9. Focus instruction based on specific objectives. For example, block off parts of a workbook page or an assignment to focus on one skill or idea.
10. Slow the teaching pace and allow extra time for students to complete tasks.
11. Use a reward system, such as earning special privileges. Have students help keep track of their achievements on a progress chart.
12. Provide many practice opportunities. Simple repetition works best in many cases.
13. Provide immediate feedback. It keeps interest and motivation high and lessens the chance that students “learn” a mistake by not noticing correction made later to their work.
14. Evaluate student work by focusing on specific learning goals for that student.
15. For evaluation, give tests orally and accept oral responses, or highlight the questions that are most important for students to answer.

This another informative post from Wangsuda of the defunct TEFLWatch Forums.

When applying for, or showing interest in, jobs advertised on the internet, it is important to put your best “e-face” forward. You want your e-mail to stand out from all the others that are sent so that YOU make it to the short list. To accomplish this, follow these guidelines when using the internet for your job search.

PART ONE: THE DON’TS
1. Do not send an attached resume with no cover letter. If the person reading your e-mail does not know what you want or are applying for, they probably will not open the attachment.
2. If a contact name is given in the ad, then address your e-mail to the contact name.
If no contact name s given (and that speaks poorly for the person or company recruiting), then address your e-mail to “To Whom It May Concern,” “The Faculty Selection Committee,” or “Dear Sir or Ma’am.”
3. Do not send out blanket e-mails (the same e-mail to a multitude of schools/people). That shows people that you did not read the ad, you simply sent out a letter to every available job.
4. Do not apply for a job for which you are not qualified. Read the ad and see if you are qualified.
5. Do not send information filled with errors. If you do not care about the quality of work you send out, then why would you care about the quality of work you do for a school?

PART TWO: THE DO’S
1. Do put the name of the position for which you apply in the subject line of your e-mail. This shows that you read the ad.
2. Do write a cover letter. This letter should be four brief paragraphs that cover the following:
a. Paragraph one: introduce yourself. Give your name, age, nationality, language(s) spoken, and the name of the position for which you are applying.
b. Paragraph two: summarize your qualifications. What are your university degrees? What teaching credentials and/or certificates have you earned?
c. Paragraph three: summarize your work experience as it applies to the job. In other words, if you are applying for a teaching position, what teaching have you done in the past?
d. Paragraph four: list your contact information.
3. End your cover letter simply.

PART THREE: THE UNDERSTANDINGS
1. Understand that employers read many e-mails per job ad. Make yours professional.
2. Understand that your religious beliefs might be different from others. Try to leave out religious salutations from your e-mails.
3. Understand that employers are looking for specific qualifications for their positions. Make sure you realize this and highlight how you fill those qualifications. You can do this in the second and third paragraphs of your cover letter.
4. Understand and read the job ad before you apply.

For most westerners, you never really have to worry if you need a visa or not because most countries have visa free entry. Delta Airlines makes its TIMATIC Database available for travelers to check to see if they need visas or not. It includes every nationality and every country.

I have found the MIT Open Courseware site to be indispensable for learning in a structured and more in-depth manner. In case, you are unfamiliar with it, MIT has put much of their course information online, including lectures, course notes, assignments and even textbooks online for anyone to use and benefit from. There is a huge wealth of subjects to study, including several foreign languages.

This another informative post from Wangsuda of the defunct TEFLWatch Forums.

Regardless of what your school or organization states, ALWAYS have your own supplies ready and with you at all times while at work. What you need to prepare is a “teacher toolbox,” containing all your supplies. In a regular tackle-box container, you should have:
1. Whiteboard markers in at least three colors. Bottles of refill ink for said markers are also recommended and rather cheap. I find that the Sakura brand of markers is very long lasting, and very easy to refill. So far this year, I have only used one set of colored markers – they last forever! Oh yes, do not forget whiteboard marker erasures!
1a. Loads of chalk (various colors) if no whiteboard is available.
2. Pens and pencils. Try to keep at least five extra pens near you at all times, as well as five “2B’ pencils for marking computerized grade sheets. This category also includes felt markers for grading (black or blue), and liquid paper or correction tape.
3. Stapler and staples. I have yet to teach at a school ANYWHERE where I have easy access to a stapler. Get your own. Stay away from the smaller staplers that use the #10 refills; they really are not worth anything. For all school stapling needs (from one sheet to 20 sheets) obtain an Elephant Brand #DS-45N stapler and at least two boxes of #35 staple refills.
4. One box of assorted clips. Like staplers, they are never around when you need one; just get your own.
5. One box of paper clips.
6. A glue stick.
7. A decent pair of scissors. Schools usually have the small, “made for kindergarten” types, and they are crap. Get adult scissors.
8. Your own hole punch. The Power Stone PS-20 is small, and can punch up to 10 sheets of paper at a time.
9. A calculator.
10. Markers for overhead projectors (nothing worse than having access to an overhead projector and having nothing with which to write).
11. Post-It notes.
12. A floppy disk and CD-W (if you have computer access).
13. A pad of lined, A-4 paper (at least 100 sheets).
14. A ream of unlined A-4 paper (optional).
15. Rubber bands.

Yes, this is a big list, but all is obtainable at the larger stores (Big C, Tesco-Lotus) and can be purchased for under 1000 baht. There are pros and cons to purchasing your own supplies. The pros are that you are ready to teach on the first day of class WITHOUT searching for supplies and making lame apologies to your students as to why you cannot write on the whiteboards (“sorry kids, I didn’t think I had to bring my own,” is NOT a good impression). The cons? Your school might not ever buy you supplies if you show up with your own. My advice is to be prepared. Even when I taught in America, I always had my teacher toolbox with me, and refilled it from what the school supplied

Lesson #2
I hope you got the sample blog up and running, but like Thai students you're probably waiting for the whole series before you even get started. Get started, now!

Ok, you got 10 posts up on your blog. It's much but it's a start. Now, sign up for Google Adsense. If your posts are topical, Google's gonna approve you and you can start adding ads to the site very soon.

Google Adsense pays shit, but money is money. It's gonna be the gravy as you'll see in future lessons, but might as well start making the gravy now.

Now that you got up ads on your site, don't stop making posts. Make a new post every 3 to 4 days related to your topic.

Truthfully, you got a site, but you ain't shit for traffic. You need to get traffic to your site. Instead of going to a different lesson for this, I'll just make this lesson bigger.

You need to start visiting blogs, preferably something like dofollow blogs. Google is your friend. Start making topical comments on them and include your blog address. Instead of wasting time on forums like Ajarn and making 10,000 posts about games, spend that time getting comments put on blogs. I suggest 15 to 20 of them a day for 2 weeks. You'll get search engine ranking and traffic. Keep it up. In two weeks, you'll have more or less 250 links.

Blog comments ain't gonna give you a lot of quality links. For quality links, you need to get listed in a few article directory. In your niche area of your blog, write about 10 400 word articles about your subject and submit them one a day to a site like ezinearticles.com. After they accept your articles, start pimping the articles out to other article directories. I'd suggest 5 to 10 of them and within 2 weeks, you'll probably have more than 100 links.

350 backlinks ain't much but it's a start. If you kept posting for the two weeks as well, you'll have close to 15 posts up on your site and 350 backlinks. Now it's time to look to increase your income. That's for lesson 3.

First off, how do you make money? Well, we're gonna start from the ground floor and I'm gonna consider that you're broke as a street beggar on an empty soi. I'm gonna show you how to make money on the net. All you need is a computer, or access to one(maybe your school computer) and access to the net.

Ok, let's get started. In lesson 1, you need to first think of a product or offer you could make a website for. It's probably best to make it something you know about or have a passion about. Dating, mobile phones, computers, chocolate chip cookies, you name it, you can monetize it.

I like the Google Keyword Tool at :
https://adwords.google.co...elect/KeywordToolExternal

Use it to look up the value of keywords and what kind of search volume they have. It may not mean much, but in a few lessons, you'll understand why.

Now I want you to get a website. There's tons of free sites out there, wordpress.com, blogspot.com and googlepages are just three places to get free websites. All three can serve our purposes, but I'd err towards Blogspot as a good place to start.

Sign up for a blogspot.com account and in less than 5 minutes you'll have a website ready to use. Now start making some damn post on your blog. Keep them related to your site and make about a dozen of them, make no more than 1 or 2 a day. Once you got at least 10 posts up, then you're ready for lesson 2.
